Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Located in north-western Tibet, south-western Qinghai and south-eastern Xinjiang. The climate in the IBA is cold and dry, with strong radiation. The main vegetation type is high-altitude grassland. There are extensive inland river systems within the IBA, including the source of Yangtze River.
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals including Ursus arctos, Panthra uncia, Bos mutus, Equus kiang and Pantholops hodgsoni.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
This IBA has many nature reserves, including Tibet’s Changtang National Nature Reserve (24,712,000 ha) which was established in 1993, and Qinghai’s Changtang National Nature Reserve (4,500,000 ha) which was established in 1997.
