Changbai Shan Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located in south-eastern Jilin Province, with North Korea to the south-east. The IBA is in the core area of Changbai Shan’s primary forest, with prominent vertical zonation of vegetation from temperate coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest to tundra on the summit.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Panthera tigris altaia, Martes zibellina, Cervus nippon, Lutra lutra and Naemorhedus goral.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1960, and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1986. Changbai Shan was designated in 1979 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
