Site location and context
Chancery Lane Swamp (N 13° 03' 46.68", W 59° 30' 00.55") is situated on the south coast of the island. The seasonal wetland is an irregular mosaic of shallow water, mudflats and grassy areas. It is ca. 8 acres in extent and is bound by a vegetated berm to seaward, pasture and an inland cliff. Residential development is encroaching towards the western end of the marsh.
The wetland is an important refuge for migrant and vagrant waders and a critical feeding area for Little Egrets.
Non-bird biodiversity: Not applicable.
Grassy,seasonal wetland.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The wetland is in private ownership. Most of the adjacent land has already been approved for development. Any commercial or residential development that does not leave it intact or does not allow an adequate buffer zone will degrade the wetland.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The marsh is designated a “Natural Heritage Conservation Area” and "special study area" (Government of Barbados, 2003).
