Caucasus Biosphere Reserve

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caucasian Snowcock Tetraogallus caucasicus LC resident (1984–1995) 600 birds A2, A3, B3
Middle Spotted Woodpecker Leiopicus medius LC resident (1984) 50 pairs B3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 good low low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Corncrake Crex crex 300 / 300 (males) 100 good
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus 8 / 8 (pairs) 100 good
Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus 1 / 2 (pairs) 50 not assessed
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos 4 / 4 (pairs) 100 good
Krueper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi 2,000 / 2,000 (pairs) 100 good
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria 20 / 30 (pairs) 67 not assessed
Great Rosefinch Carpodacus rubicilla 20 / 20 (pairs) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
