Castrejón reservoir


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
An irrigation reservoir with steep banks on the River Tajo. There are areas of marshland and alluvial woodland.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding and wintering waterbirds, particularly wintering Phalacrocorax carbo.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
There are high levels of disturbance as a result of recreational activities. Hunting is also a threat. Some parts of the reservoir are subject to sedimentation.



Protected areas
National None International Partial1,200 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Río Tajo en Castrejon, Islas de Malpica del Tajo y Azután, 1,960 ha).
