Site location and context
Located in the west of Weining County. Cao Hai is a freshwater lake at 2,170 m, with a rich growth of water plants in the lake, and marshes and meadows.
Non-bird biodiversity: The amphibian Rana weiningensis is endemic to this area.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a nature reserve in 1985, and upgraded to a national nature reserve (12,000 ha) in 1992. Cao Hai was designated in 2004 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
