PH007
Candaba swamp This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Baer's Pochard Aythya baeri CR winter (1979) present A1
Garganey Spatula querquedula LC winter (1980–1989) abundant A4i
Philippine Duck Anas luzonica VU resident (1997) min 20 birds A1, A4i
Northern Pintail Anas acuta LC winter (1980–1989) common A4i
Great White Egret Ardea alba LC non-breeding (1987) 3,000–5,000 birds A4i
Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis NT non-breeding (1900–1919) present A1
Streaked Reed-warbler Acrocephalus sorghophilus CR winter (1982–1996) common A1
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (1982) 100,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2001. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) poor (40–69%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Other happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Artificial/Terrestrial major (>10)
Wetlands (inland) major (>10)
