Site description (2007 baseline)
The IBA covers three separate parts of the island of Eday, in addition to the island of the Calf of Eday, which is located to the north. Maritime grassland and moorland, sometimes submontane in character, occur with nutrient-poor freshwater lochs. The site supports notable breeding populations of seabirds, waterbirds, and upland species, and for wintering waders.
