Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A 45-km reach of the River Danube between Dunaszekcsõ and the Serbian border, including Béda-Karapancsa and Riha lake. Both permanently flooded and well-drained flood-plains support ancient forests, plantations, backwaters and reedbeds (
Phragmites). Human activities include fishing, angling, navigation and hunting.
An important area for wintering geese and diving ducks (Anatidae). Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (2-4 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
River traffic is heavy on this reach of the Danube, and causes problems of disturbance to birds, and damage to the river channel itself through dredging and canalization.
