Site description (2012 baseline):

Site location and context
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Libya Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Mediterranean and Black Sea FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 1065 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 126 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 21.35 and 21.5 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.11 and 0.2 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
1 species triggers IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Geziret al Elba - Ayn al Ghazalah Bay include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Lesser Crested Tern (LC) 60-60 individuals.
