Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A coastal lagoon on the northern side of the Girond estuary. It is surrounded by sand-dunes and sea on the western side and
Pinus woodland on the eastern edge.
A wintering site for 3,000-10,000 waterbirds and an important migration stop-over site (2,000-5,000 individuals).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Tourism, including boating, and open access to the site for the public, results in disturbance of wintering and breeding birds. Pollution from heavy metals from the Gironde estuary (`Other' threats) is also a threat. There is a project to create a new nature reserve to protect the lagoon and sand-dunes.
