Bonne Anse

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A coastal lagoon on the northern side of the Girond estuary. It is surrounded by sand-dunes and sea on the western side and Pinus woodland on the eastern edge.

Key biodiversity
A wintering site for 3,000-10,000 waterbirds and an important migration stop-over site (2,000-5,000 individuals).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Tourism, including boating, and open access to the site for the public, results in disturbance of wintering and breeding birds. Pollution from heavy metals from the Gironde estuary (`Other' threats) is also a threat. There is a project to create a new nature reserve to protect the lagoon and sand-dunes.

Protected areas
National High International None1,060 ha of IBA covered by Hunting Reserve (Baie de la Bonne Anse, 1,060 ha).
