Bolchoi Tkhach mountain

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT resident (1987) 50 birds A2, A3
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT resident (2007) 20–30 males A1, A2, A3
Corncrake Crex crex LC breeding (2007) 20–30 males A1
Yellow-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus LC resident (2007) 30–50 pairs A3
Krueper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi LC breeding (2007) 50–100 pairs A1
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria LC breeding (2007) 2–3 pairs A3
Semi-collared Flycatcher Ficedula semitorquata LC breeding (2007) 200–300 pairs A1
Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris LC breeding (2007) 10–30 pairs A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 not assessed high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus 1 / 1 (pairs) 100 not assessed
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus 0 / 1 (pairs) 0 not assessed
Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus 2 / 5 (birds) 40 not assessed

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
