Site description (2002 baseline)
Two ponds, Bohdaneèský rybník and Matka, define the water and wetland characteristics of this IBA. Other water bodies include the Zábranské rybníky ponds and Opatovický canal on the eastern border. The land around the ponds is a mixture of meadows with various degree of humidity, reedbeds and sedge stands. Forests cover only a limited part of the area and the prevailing tree species there is the alder.

Key biodiversity
The area is a breeding site, migration stopover and a wintering site of many rare bird species.
