Bawangling


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Bawangling is one of the four major forest areas in Hainan Province, and is located on the north-western edge of the Yajia Da Ling mountains. It has a large area of tropical monsoon rainforest, tropical rainforest, tropical montane rainforest, valley rainforest, tropical montane coniferous evergreen forest and stunted tropical montane forest.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: The nature reserve supports the only surviving population of Nomascus hainanus. Other animals include Viverricula indica, Macaca mulatta, Cervus unicolor and Ratufa bicolor. Protected plants include Litchi chinensis var. euspontanea and Reevesia spp.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1980, and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1988.
