Site description (1999 baseline):

Site location and context
Located 124 km east of Jember in the driest part of Java, Baluran has the peak and caldera of Baluran Mountain which linked with Ijen area, 35 km sout-hest. There are some small islands on the east coast between Air Karang and Tanjung Candibang, and the north part there is a rocky formation between Gatal and Bilik



Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Bos javanicus, Cuon alpinus, Panthera pardus and Trachypithecus auratus (Nijman 1997, Hedges & Tyson 1996, Whitten et.al.1996). Erythrina cuodophylla is the endemic flora of Java (MacKinnon et.al.1982).



Habitat and land use
Most of habitat is dry forest (Whitten et.al.1996).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Illegal settlements, wildlife hunting, forest cutting, collection of "nener" fry and expansion of exotic plants in the park (MacKinnon et.al.1982).



Protected areas
25000 ha of this area declared as national park based on SK Menteri Kehutanan No.279/Kpts-VI/97 on 23 May 1997 (Anon 1997, Anon 1998).
