Baima Xueshan Nature Reserve

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Tibetan Snowcock Tetraogallus tibetanus LC resident (2000) present A3
Buff-throated Partridge Tetraophasis szechenyii LC resident (2000) present A3
Temminck's Tragopan Tragopan temminckii LC resident (2000) present A3
Blood Pheasant Ithaginis cruentus LC resident (2000) present A3
Koklass Pheasant Pucrasia macrolopha LC resident (2000) present A3
Lady Amherst's Pheasant Chrysolophus amherstiae LC resident (2000) present A3
White Eared-pheasant Crossoptilon crossoptilon LC resident (2000) present A3
Tibetan Eared-pheasant Crossoptilon harmani LC resident (2000) present A3
Chinese Grouse Tetrastes sewerzowi NT resident (2000) present A3
Lord Derby's Parakeet Psittacula derbiana LC resident (2000) present A3
Yunnan Nuthatch Sitta yunnanensis LC resident (2000) present A2, A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2008) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2008 good high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use likely in short term (<4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
