Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A very large bay with islands, mudflats (22,000 ha), raised saltmarsh (>1,000 ha), grassland and arable land, rocky coast and cliffs. Human activities include cattle-raising.
This is an important site, holding 20,000 or more wintering and passage waterbirds on a regular basis. It is also an important area for passage passerines.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The drainage of wet meadows for cultivation is slowly causing the drying out the whole area. Breeding sites for waterbirds are being lost.
