Site description (2007 baseline):
Site location and context
The Bagre Biological Corridor was established in 1995 to provide a connection between the Punta Patino Nature Reserve and Darien National Park. The corridor runs along the SerranĂa de Bagre, a low range of hills that is mostly forested. It is adjacent to the Embera-Wounaan Comarca 2 (indigenous homeland).
Great Green Macaw was frequently observed in the area by L. Sucre (pers. comm. to G. Angehr) on an expedition to demarcate the boundaries of the area in 2007. Given the size of the area, and that it continues to be mostly forested, it may represent one of the most important areas for this species in Darien Province outside Darien National Park. There is no information on other species in the reserve, but several of the species of the Darien Lowlands EBA certainly occur.
Non-bird biodiversity: Unknown.
The area mostly consists of tropical forest. It is probably used in part for subsistence agriculture and hunting by Embera and Wounaan indigenous communities, and perhaps by other local residents, but the extent of these activities is unknown.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Subsistence agriculture, cattle raising, logging, and hunting are all probably threats to the area, but the extent of these activities is unknown.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
None known. A basic survey of the avifauna is a high priority.
The area coincides with the Bagre Biological Corridor, established in 1995, and overlaps with the Chepigana Forest Reserve.
The area consists mainly of national land, but the extent of additional land claims is unknown.
Site access / Land-owner requests
Access is very difficult due to logistics. The area is roadless.
Lider Sucre provided observations of Great Green Macaw.
