Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A reservoir with steep banks and some partially flooded islets with riverine vegetation.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding herons.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from ploughing of land on the islands for crops, dumping of material in the wetland, fires and illegal hunting.



Protected areas
National High International Partial933 ha of IBA covered by Wild Fauna Reserve (Embalse de Azután, 1,250 ha). 620 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Río Tajo en Castrejón, Islas de Malpica del Tajo y Azután, 1,960 ha).
