Site location and context
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within High Seas International Waters and the Atlantic, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 22993 km2 and is 671 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 5458 to 5857 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.62 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 12.77 and 14.61 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.53 and 0.84 mg/m3.
1 species triggers IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 13931-17413 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Incubation (Sep-Dec) life-history stage.
