Site description (2012 baseline)
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within High Seas International Waters and the Atlantic, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 3717 km2 and is 499 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 5003 to 5606 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 3.85 and 5.11 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.36 and 0.46 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 31205-62410 individuals of Grey-headed Albatross (VU) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Non-breeding (Oct-Jun) life-history stage. 13931-13931 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Incubation (Sep-Dec) life-history stage.
