GR164
Astypalaia island and surrounding islets This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2012 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Yelkouan Shearwater Puffinus yelkouan VU breeding 2007-2012 40-60 breeding pairs A1, B3, C1
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii VU breeding 1997-2012 2-25 breeding pairs A1, C1
Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae LC breeding 2005 599 breeding pairs A4ii, B1iii, B2, C2, C6

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2012) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2012. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 not assessed very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Energy production and mining likely in short term (within 4 years) whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Human intrusions and disturbance likely in short term (within 4 years) some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Biological resource use happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Most of site (50-90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management plan exists but the management planning process has begun Very little or no conservation action taking place low
