Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A freshwater lake, marshes and wet meadows 2 km north-west of Vafiohori village. The area is divided by a canal. Human activities include arable agriculture, stock-raising, and hunting.
This is an important site for passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (passage).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The site is seriously threatened by construction of a large dam in the marshland which began in 1996. This will flood areas of marsh-land and wet meadows. Other threats include hunting and the expansion of agriculture. A quarry is to reopen at the southern end of the site.
