Archipelago of Northern Åland

Site description (2024 baseline):

Site location and context
Located north of the Åland mainland, mostly remote islands surrounded by open sea.

Key biodiversity
A key site for several birds characteristic of the Baltic Sea archipelago. The site includes large colonies of Razorbill, Black Guillemot and Lesser Black-backed Gull. Also important breeding area for e.g. Arctic Tern, Arctic Skua, Turnstone and Redshank.

Habitat and land use
Rocky island and islets with little land-use activities except for occasional fishing and hunting.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
In the Baltic Sea, the major future threat is offshore wind farms. Also fishing and hunting activities may threat the birds of the area. Although the area is pretty remote, also human disturbance during the summer months may pose a risk. The general eutrophication of the Baltic Sea may cause some habitat changes.
