GR053
Antichasia mountains and Meteora This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Little Owl Athene noctua LC resident (1994) 100 pairs B2
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus EN breeding (1996) 10 pairs B2, C6
Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus LC breeding (1994) 7–10 pairs B2, C6
Lesser Spotted Eagle Clanga pomarina LC breeding (1994) 6–8 pairs B2, C6
Levant Sparrowhawk Accipiter brevipes LC breeding (1994) 14–30 pairs B2
Eurasian Green Woodpecker Picus viridis LC resident (1994) 50–100 pairs B2
Middle Spotted Woodpecker Leiopicus medius LC resident (1994) 50–100 pairs B3, C6
White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos LC resident (1994) 5–20 pairs C2
Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio LC breeding (1994) 100–300 pairs B2, C6
Cretzschmar's Bunting Emberiza caesia LC breeding (1994) 20–100 pairs B3, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
