Site summary
The at-sea distribution of birds was estimated based on information derived from tracking data (via a comprehensvie literature review) and through the application of a modified foraging radius approach with a density decay function to identify some of the most important marine areas for chick-rearing adult penguins throughout waters surrounding Antarctica following the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) framework. Specifically, we built upon the method outlined in Critchley et al. (2018) to map the distribution (on a 5 km x 5 km grid) and estimate the abundance of penguins at sea from individual colonies during the chick rearing period. For further details, see Handley et al. (2021).
