As at January 2021, this marine IBA is completely or primarily within CCAMLR subarea: 48.1 , and CCAMLR MPA planning domain: 1
1 species triggers IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. An estimated 34228 - 147889 Chinstrap Penguins primarily from 38 colonies (as per the analysis) are present at the site during the chick-rearing period (Jan-Feb). For details of specific colonies, see the marine IBA inventory available with the manuscript: Handley et al. 2021. (Frontiers in Marine Science). This marine IBA is also adjecent to a marine IBA triggered by Light Mantled Albatross and Grey Headed Albatross populations from South Georgia
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Primary threats believed to be having population and site level impacts to penguin species in this marine IBA: Climate Change, Competition with fisheries (Overfishing)
Jan 2021: marine IBA could be afforded further protection if proposed D1MPA for Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands is implemented
Funding for the identification of this marine IBA was kindly provided by the PEW Charitable Trusts
