Anson Bay, Daly and Reynolds River Floodplains

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Magpie Goose Anseranas semipalmata LC resident (1984–1991) 50,000–332,000 birds A4i
Wandering Whistling-duck Dendrocygna arcuata LC non-breeding (1990–2000) 40,000 birds A4i
Pied Heron Egretta picata LC resident (1990–2000) 2,500 birds A4i
Bush Thick-knee Burhinus grallarius LC resident (1998–2008) uncommon A1
Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris EN non-breeding (1990–2002) 5,000 birds A4i
Varied Lorikeet Psitteuteles versicolor LC resident (1998–2008) uncommon A3
Rainbow Pitta Pitta iris LC resident (1998–2008) frequent A2, A3
Silver-crowned Friarbird Philemon argenticeps LC resident (1998–2008) uncommon A3
Bar-breasted Honeyeater Ramsayornis fasciatus LC resident (1998–2008) uncommon A3
White-gaped Honeyeater Stomiopera unicolor LC resident (1998–2008) common A3
Australian Yellow White-eye Zosterops luteus LC resident (1998–2008) uncommon A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 moderate high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
