Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A bay with saltwater lagoons, saltwater marshes and mudflats.



Key biodiversity
The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds in winter, on a regular basis. The site is also important for breeding waders.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Disturbance of birds by tourists and aquaculture activities are problems. The possible extension of a golf course in the area also poses a threat.



Protected areas
National Partial International High195 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Lilleau des Niges, 195 ha). 1,300 ha of IBA covered by Hunting Reserve (Il de Ré, 1,300 ha). 4,350 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Anse du Fiers d'Ars en Ré, 5,080 ha).
