IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2014 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('key species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica VU breeding (2013) 15,080 breeding pairs B1ii, B2
A4iii Species group - seabirds n/a breeding (2013) 15,000 breeding pairs A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2014. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation status
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 unfavourable medium high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the key species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
European Shag Gulosus aristotelis 15,700 / 15,080 (breeding pairs) 100 favourable
European Shag Gulosus aristotelis 27 / 40 (breeding pairs) 68 unfavourable
Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla 771 / 900 (breeding pairs) 86 near favourable

Pressure (threats to the key species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Climate change and severe weather happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no deterioration (<1% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining likely in long term (beyond 4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) no deterioration (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the key species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area of site (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented high
