Ambrym West

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Vanuatu Scrubfowl Megapodius layardi LC resident (2005–2009) 250-999 nests A1, A2
Tanna Fruit-dove Ptilinopus tannensis LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Red-bellied Fruit-dove Ptilinopus greyi LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Grey-eared Honeyeater Lichmera incana LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Cardinal Myzomela Myzomela cardinalis LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Fan-tailed Gerygone Gerygone flavolateralis LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Long-tailed Triller Lalage leucopyga LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Vanuatu Streaked Fantail Rhipidura spilodera LC resident (2005–2009) uncommon A2
Melanesian Flycatcher Myiagra caledonica LC resident (2005–2009) common A2
Buff-bellied Monarch Neolalage banksiana LC resident (2005–2009) rare A2
Vanuatu White-eye Zosterops flavifrons LC resident (2005–2009) abundant A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2021) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2021 good medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Vanuatu Scrubfowl Megapodius layardi 350 / 350 (nests) 100 good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest - moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Geological events likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
