Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A steppe area in central Sardinia, between the villages of Abbasanta and Macomer, crossed by numerous streams and rich in small, temporary wetlands. The site also includes the upper valley of the Tirso river and Lago Omodeo, an artificial lake that is temporarily dry. The main land-use is grazing.
An important site for breeding
Tetrax tetrax and for wintering
Burhinus oedicnemus.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are the burning of vegetation by farmers and shepherds, illegal hunting, and the opening of new roads.
