Albufera de Mallorca and Albufereta de Pollença marshes This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2011 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN resident (2009) max 1 pairs A1, C1, C6
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT breeding (2009) max 4 pairs B2, C2
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC passage (1992) 51–250 birds C2, C6
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC winter (2009) present C2, C6
Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio LC resident (2009) min 200 pairs A4i, B1i, C2, C6
Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris LC resident (2009) 1–10 pairs C6
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (2009) max 50 pairs B1i, C2, C6

Western Marsh-harrier Circus aeruginosus LC resident (2009) 12 pairs C6
Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon LC resident (2005) min 522 pairs C2, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2011. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 poor very high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Pollution happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
