IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina LC breeding (1982) 1,200–1,300 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding (2007) 150–250 pairs A1, B2
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra LC resident (1982) 9,000–10,000 pairs B1i
Great White Egret Ardea alba LC resident (1970) 50 pairs A4i, B1i
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT breeding (2007) 60–100 pairs A1, A4i, B1i, B2
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT non-breeding (2007) 50 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC breeding (2007) 30–50 pairs B2
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC breeding (2007) 28 pairs A1
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2007) 20,000–100,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 moderate high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate
Grassland good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate
Desert good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
