General characteristics
The Kangean Islands are in the Java Sea, to the north-east of Java in Indonesia (see map, p. 494). They support three restricted-range species: Javan Plover Charadrius javanicus, a bird of sandy beaches and mudflats which also occurs in the Javan coastal zone (EBA 161); Pink-headed Imperial-pigeon Ducula rosacea (see Secondary Area s107); and Grey-cheeked Tit-babbler Macronous flavicollis, a bird of open forest and scrub which also occurs in the Java and Bali forests (EBA 160) and is represented on the Kangean Islands by the endemic subspecies prillwitzi.
