General characteristics

Simeulue lies off the north-west coast of Sumatra, in Aceh province of Indonesia (see map, p. 488). The natural vegetation of the island is tropical lowland rain forest (Whitmore 1984). It supports two restricted-range species, the single-island endemic Simeulue Scops-owl Otus umbra, which is found in the forest and forest-edge habitats, and the threatened Silvery Wood-pigeon Columba argentina (classified as Vulnerable; see Secondary Area s101).
