General characteristics
Four restricted-range species are recorded from the Fan-Si-Pan range in northern Vietnam: the threatened Ward's Trogon Harpactes wardi (classified as Vulnerable; also in EBA 130), Red-winged Laughingthrush Garrulax formosus (also in EBA 137), Broad-billed Warbler Tickellia hodgsoni (also in EBA 130) and the threatened Yellow-billed Nuthatch Sitta solangiae (Vulnerable; also in EBAs 142, 145). T. hodgsoni has also been recorded in the mountains of northern Laos, and it is possible that some of these species also occur in the Ailao mountains in southern Yunnan province, China. They are found in broadleaf evergreen forest, scrub and bamboo above c.1,800 m (King et al. 1975), although S. solangiae has been recorded down to 1,550 m on Fan-Si-Pan (Harrap and Quinn 1996). There has been extensive forest loss around Fan-Si-Pan and in the Ailao mountains (Collins et al. 1991). However, there are several protected areas in the Ailao mountains in China (IUCN 1992d), and Nui Hoang Lien Nature Reserve in Vietnam (IUCN 1992c) presumably includes montane habitats suitable for the restricted-range species.
