General characteristics
This Secondary Area has been identified owing to Sillem's Mountain-finch Leucosticte sillemi, a recently described species (thus not listed by Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) known from just two specimens collected in 1929 at c.5,125 m on the barren plateau between the upper Kara Kash and the upper Yarkand rivers in southern Xinjiang autonomous region (in an area under Chinese administration but claimed by India; see map, p. 412) (Roselaar 1992, 1994). It is classified as Data Deficient because its current status, habitat requirements and range are unknown.
