North-east Sudan - Secondary Area

Country/Territory Sudan
General characteristics

It is not possible to define the location of this Secondary Area which has been identified on account of the threatened Red Sea Swallow Hirundo perdita (classified as Vulnerable), known only by a single specimen found dead at the Sangaheb lighthouse to the north-east of Port Sudan. It has been judged that the swallow is most likely to be found in the Red Sea hills of Sudan or Eritrea (Fry and Smith 1985), inland from where the type-specimen was found. Unidentified cliff swallows possibly of this species have been seen at several localities in Ethiopia, but they are more likely to represent an undescribed taxon (Madge and Redman 1989, Atkins and Harvey 1994, Robertson 1996).
