General characteristics
This Secondary Area is defined by the range of White-chested Tinkerbird Pogoniulus makawai (classified as Vulnerable) which is known by just a single specimen from north-west Zambia, collected there at c.1,150 m in 'mavunda' forest, in which Cryptosepalum is a dominant tree (Dowsett 1985). It is here treated as a good species, following Fry et al. (1988) and Collar et al. (1994), but was considered to be an aberrant Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird P. bilineatus by Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993) and by Dowsett and Dowsett-Lemaire (1993). There are extensive mavunda thickets in north-west Zambia and adjacent Angola, and this bird may conceivably persist as a rare relict in this habitat (Fry et al. 1988).
