General characteristics
This Secondary Area refers to the range of Salinas Monjita Xolmis salinarum, a species described as recently as 1979. The area lies in north-west Córdoba, extreme southern Catamarca, south-west Santiago del Estero and La Rioja provinces of north-west Argentina (see map, p. 242). The landscape comprises semi-open scrubby vegetation on salt-impregnated soil around the extensive Salinas Grande and Salinas Ambargasta (Ridgely and Tudor 1994). During the austral winter the monjita gathers in flocks of up to c.50 birds, but disperses into pairs during the breeding season (Ridgely and Tudor 1994).
