Country/Territory | Brazil |
This Secondary Area has resulted from the recent discovery of a new species (and genus) of bird from coastal Paraná in south-east Brazil (Bornschein et al. 1995; see map, p. 286). Long-billed Antwren Stymphalornis acutirostris was discovered only in 1995, and to date is known from taboa Typha dominguensis marshes at Ipacaray and Betares, which are located near the main coastal road between Matinhos and Praia de Leste in Paraná. The little information published indicates that the taxon shows close affinities with Formicivora antbirds. There is a great concern regarding the conservation status of this new species because it inhabits marshes which are being steadily encroached upon by human activities. A technical group for the bird's protection has been created in an effort to safeguard its future.
