Country/Territory | Brazil |
This Brazilian Secondary Area around Cachoeira Nazaré lies at 100 m elevation near the west bank of the Ji-paraná in north-east Rondônia and is the only known locality for Rondônia Bushbird Clytoctantes atrogularis. The area comprises a large tract of mature terra firme forest with some dense vine tangles. The antbird was described to science as recently as 1990 from a single female specimen and from two sightings of males (Lanyon et al. 1990). It is classified as Data Deficient but is likely to be very rare as these records were made during many field hours and net-days of study. However, it is thought that the species' range almost certainly includes adjacent parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso states, because several species endemic to forests between the upper Madeira and Tapajós rivers are also recorded at Cachoeira Nazaré. The area generally supports very rich bird communities, nearly 400 species being found at Cachoeira Nazaré (Lanyon et al. 1990). Rapid deforestation (c.4,000 km2 per year in the 1980s) and hydroelectric projects in this part of Brazil must be considered threats to this region.
