General characteristics
Politically part of Colombia, this 40-km2 island is situated in the Caribbean some 235 km east of the Nicaraguan coast and 100 km north of San Andrés Island (Secondary Area s013; see map, p. 135). Providence is volcanic with steep hills rising to 380 m, mostly forested or devoted to ranching (Hilty and Brown 1986). It has a single restricted-range species, Thick-billed Vireo Vireo crassirostris, which also occurs on Cuba (EBA 025), the Bahamas (EBA 026), Hispaniola (EBA 028) and the Cayman Islands (Secondary Area s014).
