Summary/History
Fiji (officially the Republic of Fiji) is an archipelago consisting of over 132 islands located in the South Pacific (Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics, 2008). The economy is one of the most developed in the Pacific with a heavy reliance on sugar exports and tourism; tourism earned Fiji

Government's support/relevant policy
The Fijian Government is a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity and participated in the Western South Pacific CBD workshop to identify Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas within its waters. Conservation targets are set through the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. Government departments are involved with the identification of Sites of National Significance, and administer protected areas. Many communities across Fiji have endorsed Locally Managed Marine Areas. The Critically Endangered Fiji Petrel is protected under Fijian law. Please see policy tab for list of agreements that this country is party to.
