Site description (2000 baseline)
A coastal wetland with saltmarshes, brackish lagoons, extensive reedbeds (Phragmites), sand-dunes, and Pinus forest. Human activities include arable agriculture, stock-raising, fishing, hunting, and recreation.

Key biodiversity
This is an important IBA for passage migrants and breeding and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (wintering), Aythya nyroca (minimum 30 passage individuals), Aquila clanga (wintering), Falco naumanni (passage).
