Site description (2009 baseline)
Located in Yanqing County, northern Beijing, about 100 km from downtown Beijing. The IBA was established as Song Shan forestry area in the late 1950s and as a nature reserve in 1986. Song Shan is part of the Yan Shan mountain range. The vegetation is warm temperate deciduous broadleaf forest.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Panthera pardus, Vulpes vulpes, Mustela sibirica and Naemorhedus goral.
