Site description (2009 baseline)
Located on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas, in Tingri County, to the south-west of Qowowuyag Mountain (8,201 m, the sixth highest peak in the world). The IBA has high mountains and deep valleys, and dense forests. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with broadleaf evergreen forest (1,600-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-3,100 m), alpine coniferous forest (3,100-4,000 m) and alpine scrub (4,000-4,500 m).
Key biodiversity
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Presbytis entellus (a primate endemic to the Himalayas), Ursus arctos, Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus chrysogaster and Capricornis sumatraensis.
