Site description (2007 baseline)
Rishiri island is located in the Japan Sea in the north of Hokkaido. In the center of the island is Mt Rishiri (1,721m), which makes the island a round mountain that has a circumference of 60 km at the base. The island is 182 km2, and the biggest island in Hokkaido, except for the Northern Territories. This island includes various kinds of natural areas such as a high mountain, coastlines, grasslands, lakes and wetlands, and forests. The area has endemic floral species, and endemic sub species of insects.
