Site summary
The site is located 30 km southeast of Pongola town. The western section of the reserve is underlain by basalt of the Umfolozi River Formation. Up to two-thirds of the site consists of an artificial impoundment, depending upon water level. The Pongola River feeds the dam. The dam and associated wetlands are important for many wetland-dependent birds. Pink-backed Pelican Pelecanus rufescens have bred here in the past.
